Alfalfa is mostly harvested as dry forage, mainly hay.

However, in order to get the most of protein content, alfalfa can be harvested as silage or haylage, and the some conditions. Silage and haylage are an alternative option to hay.

Green forage feeding is another option (intensive indoor farming, goats for example), and alfalfa can be grazed at the 3rd and 4th cuts.

This last option is commonly used in the United States.
